In a landmark move aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has officially released the schedule and guidelines for the inaugural Class X Second Board Examinations, set to take place in May 2026.
This "Two Board" policy, which was first announced in June 2025, is a big change from the high-stakes, single-exam format. It gives students a second chance to raise their grades or clear their papers without having to wait a whole school year.
According to the notice, students can take improvement tests in up to three subjects, such as science, math, social science, and languages. The second examinations are scheduled for May 2026, and students must first appear in the main board examination to be eligible.
The board has announced a phased schedule for submission of the List of Candidates (LOC). The first phase will run from March 18 to March 31, 2026, followed by additional phases after the declaration of results, including a late fee window. Schools have been directed to ensure timely submission and accurate data entry, as no corrections will be allowed after finalization.
CBSE has clearly defined eligibility criteria. Students must have appeared in at least three subjects in the main exam to qualify. Those placed in the compartment category or improvement category or those who passed using a sixth subject are eligible under specific conditions. However, students who fail to appear in three or more subjects or fall under the ER category will not be allowed to take the second examination.
The board has also clarified that no improvement facility will be provided for internal assessments, as they are conducted throughout the academic year. Additionally, no changes in subjects or examination centres will be permitted once allotted.
Schools and principals have been advised to guide students and parents about the rules, eligibility, and deadlines. CBSE emphasized that this second examination opportunity should be used only when necessary, ensuring better planning and smooth conduct of the examination process.
The circular also highlights that all fee payments must be made online, with strict deadlines and late fee penalties applicable for delays.
