The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released the official Class 11 Home Science syllabus for the 2026-2027 academic session. Subject Code 064 is designed around the principles of NEP 2020, aiming to develop life skills, professionalism, and an entrepreneurial mindset among students.
The course for Class XI learners focuses on two broad concepts: “Self and Family” and “Home.” It guides teenagers through self-discovery, covering personality formation, thinking processes, nutrition, resources, and communication tools. The syllabus clearly separates theoretical topics from practical expectations, providing a foundation for students to understand their responsibilities as citizens.
The curriculum is divided into five units. Unit I introduces the concept of Home Science. Unit II addresses adolescence and related concerns. Unit III covers the expanding interactions of an adolescent with family, school, community, and society. Units IV and V focus on Childhood and Adulthood, respectively.
The theory paper carries 70 marks, while the practical component is worth 30 marks, for a total of 100 marks. Unit I (Introduction to Home Science) is allocated 2 marks. Unit II (Understanding oneself: Adolescence) is the largest, with 23 marks. Units III, IV, and V (Understanding Family, Community and Society; Childhood; Adulthood) each carry 15 marks. The exam duration is three hours.
Key chapters include “Understanding the Self,” covering personal and social identity, self-concept, self-esteem, and influences on identity. Other chapters address food, nutrition, health and fitness; management of resources; fabrics; media and communication technology; financial management; and care and maintenance of fabrics. The syllabus also explores concerns in diverse contexts such as nutrition, health, hygiene, and resource availability.
Unit II focuses on adolescence, the stage of life students currently belong to. It helps learners understand their personal and social identity, nutritional and health requirements, management of time and space, fabrics, and communication skills. The final chapter of this unit connects the adolescent to the family and larger society, linking to the next unit on the individual in relation to family, school, community, and society.
Students and teachers can access the official CBSE Class 11 Home Science syllabus and practical evaluation layout for the 2026-2027 session. The document includes unit-wise weightage, multi-tier chapter outlines, and laboratory assignment rubrics. The course is designed to help students understand their roles as conscientious citizens in today’s society.
