The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has published the official syllabus for Class 11 Physical Education (Subject Code 048) for the 2026-2027 academic session. The curriculum is designed to provide structured, academically sound knowledge about the science of sports, linking physical well-being with intellectual, emotional and social development.
The syllabus comprises ten structural units covering topics from ancient Yoga practices to scientific fields such as Biomechanics, Anatomy and Sports Psychology. The theory component carries 70 marks and includes concept-based inclusive questions, while the practical assessment layout features laboratory rubrics.
An inclusive environment is fostered through adaptive physical education streams for Children with Special Needs (CWSN), with alternative assessment criteria. The curriculum aims to help students develop knowledge, skills, attitudes, values and behaviours to initiate and maintain a physically active lifestyle into adulthood.
Students are encouraged to use physical activity to build personal initiative, responsibility and caring about others and the community. A positive, supportive environment is considered essential for the program's success, accommodating individual differences such as cultural identity, previous movement experiences, fitness levels and socio-emotional maturity.
The physical education committee created a researched tool called 'The Physical Education Curriculum' to provide consistency, coherence and rigor in teaching physical education across CBSE schools worldwide. The program builds students' motivation and commitment to physical activity and sports within and beyond school.
Students can also develop leadership roles irrespective of their previous experiences or ability in physical activity. The program prepares students for careers in physical education and sports, described as a dynamic field offering diverse opportunities.
CBSE has made the syllabus available for free download in PDF format. Students and teachers can access the official document to review the 70-mark theory blueprint and practical assessment details for the 2026-2027 academic year.
