The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) organised a nationwide interactive programme titled 'Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat', a Talkathon aimed at spreading awareness about substance abuse prevention among school students. The initiative was taken on the call of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a drug-free India.
The programme encouraged students to participate actively in the discussion rather than simply listen to a lecture. Students raised questions about mental health, peer pressure, friendships and the challenges young people may face when making decisions.
Students Discuss Peer Pressure
One of the key areas discussed during the Talkathon was peer pressure. Students may sometimes feel encouraged by friends or social groups to try things they are uncomfortable with. The discussion highlighted the importance of being able to say no, think carefully before making decisions and seek help when necessary.
The interaction also encouraged students to understand that asking for guidance is not a sign of weakness. Parents, teachers, counsellors and other trusted adults can provide support when students are facing difficult situations.
Focus on Mental Health
The discussion also connected substance-abuse awareness with mental health and emotional well-being. Students raised questions about how stress, loneliness, anxiety, social pressure and other difficulties can influence decision-making.
The programme highlighted the value of creating school environments where students feel comfortable discussing their concerns. Open conversations can help students understand that they do not have to deal with challenges alone.
Importance of Awareness
Awareness programmes such as the Talkathon can help students understand the risks associated with substance abuse and recognise the importance of making safe and informed choices. Instead of treating the issue only as a matter of discipline, discussions involving students can also focus on prevention, support and responsible decision-making.
The programme also underlined the role of schools and families in helping children develop healthy coping strategies and positive relationships. Teachers and parents can play an important role by listening to students, noticing changes in behaviour and guiding them towards appropriate support.
Students Take Part in the Conversation
The questions raised by students made the Talkathon an interactive platform for discussing issues that are relevant to their everyday lives. By giving students an opportunity to express their concerns, the programme encouraged them to think critically about peer influence and personal well-being.
The CBSE initiative demonstrates the importance of student-focused awareness and preventive education in schools. Conversations about drug abuse, mental health and peer pressure can help young people become better informed and more confident about seeking support and making safe choices.
The Talkathon highlighted that preventing substance abuse requires more than awareness of its risks. Open communication, emotional support, positive peer relationships and access to trusted adults can all help students navigate challenging situations.
