The Government has extended the last date for submission of applications under the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) for the academic year 2026-27 to 31 October 2026. The extension gives eligible students and schools more time to complete the application process on the National Scholarship Portal.
NMMSS is a central sector scheme run by the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education. Its main aim is to reduce dropout at Class VIII and encourage meritorious students from economically weaker sections to continue their education up to Class XII. Under the scheme, selected students receive a scholarship of ₹12,000 per year, paid as ₹1,000 per month, from Class IX to Class XII.
Who can apply?
To apply for NMMSS, a student must be studying in Class VIII in a government, government-aided or local body school. Applicants must meet the family income criteria prescribed under the scheme and qualify the state-level selection test. Students from all recognised schools covered under the scheme can apply through the National Scholarship Portal.
The scheme is especially useful for students who wish to study further but face financial difficulties at home. The monthly scholarship helps cover costs such as books, stationery, school fees and travel.
How to apply
Applications are submitted online through the National Scholarship Portal at scholarships.gov.in. Students will need documents such as Aadhaar, bank account details, income certificate and school verification. Since the process is online, students should keep scanned copies ready before starting the form.
School heads and teachers have been asked to guide students so that no eligible candidate misses the revised deadline. Many schools have set up help desks for NMMSS applicants. Students who have not yet applied should contact their school scholarship cell or NMMSS nodal officer at the earliest.
Why the extension matters
The original deadline was approaching, and many students in rural and semi-urban areas had not completed their applications due to document verification and bank account linking. The extension to 31 October 2026 gives them a fair chance to apply without rushing.
Officials have advised students to fill the form carefully and check all details before submission. Common mistakes include wrong bank account numbers, missing signatures and incomplete income certificates. Such errors can delay or cancel an application, so students should double-check every field.
What students should do now
- Visit the National Scholarship Portal and read the NMMSS guidelines.
- Collect all required documents from parents and school.
- Fill the application form with correct details.
- Get the form verified by the school.
Submit before 31 October 2026 and keep a printout for future reference.
The scholarship can be a big support for students who want to continue their studies after Class VIII. Eligible students should not wait for the last day. For any help, they can speak to their class teacher or the school scholarship in-charge.
