The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, the organising body for the JEE Advanced examination, has announced that students who currently fall short of the 75% marks requirement in Class 12 can still participate in the admission process for IITs. This decision follows several days of persistent appeals from students.
According to the announcement, such candidates are now eligible to fill in their choices and receive seat allocations based on their JEE Advanced rank. However, they must send a revised scorecard that meets the eligibility threshold—75% for General, OBC-NCL, and GEN-EWS categories, or 65% for SC, ST, and PwD categories—by July 15, 2026, via email to [email protected]. Admission will be granted once the revised scorecard is received, corresponding to the seat allocated after the fourth round of counselling.
The move comes amid widespread dissatisfaction expressed by students and parents following the CBSE results released on May 13. Lakhs of students reported receiving lower marks than anticipated and have opted for re-evaluation. A total of 4,04,319 applications have been filed to access 11,31,961 answer sheets across multiple subjects, with the re-evaluation process currently underway.
IIT Roorkee had earlier released the list of 56,880 aspirants who qualified for IIT admissions on June 1, along with their rankings. Students have been vocal on social media platforms, demanding the removal of the qualifying criteria as a one-time relief measure.
In a statement issued to a news agency on June 4, IIT Roorkee clarified that it was not feasible to completely waive the criteria, as students from 36 different boards appeared for the exam. The institute stated that the requirement could not be relaxed solely for candidates from one board.
The revised scorecard submission deadline is set for July 15, 2026. Candidates are advised to ensure their updated marks meet the category-specific minimums to secure their allocated seats.
